Color-coded Threat Amounts Are No Longer
In 2001, the federal government instituted a color-coded system of terrorism alerts. This strategy has never been very popular. A new alert strategy is being introduced on April 26 the Homeland Security Department hopes can be much more effective.
No more colors to listen to
The recent terrorism alert system had a "terror threat level" that would get listed. These were colors. The brand new system, however, issues just two levels of alerts. "Imminent" and "elevated" are listed. They're the 2 levels possible. The alerts are also going to be issued for a specific area and time period. Rather than "threat level orange," being used since 2006, something for instance "Elevated threat in the Boston airport area, expires 5/1/2011" would be listed. Active threat warnings have to be re-reviewed after two weeks when they automatically expire.
Social media's impact on things
There is more to the terror alert strategy than that. The Department of Homeland Security has put it together. There will be terror alerts seen on Facebook and Twitter. Social media online websites can be used. The Department is hoping this will help individuals pay better attention to what is going on. This is because they will already be at the sites where the stuff is occurring. Users can sign up to receive alerts via email, Facebook, Twitter, RSS data feeds, or web widgets for webmasters.
Making it affective
The alert will only be triggered if there is real threat for the brand new alert strategy. This decision is to help reduce what some are calling "threat fatigue." Sometimes a threat is there for a long time. One that is not specific will not have an impact. According to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, "We do not want people to live in fear, we want individuals to live in a state of alert and awareness." Every person gets to determine for themselves. How do you feel about it? It could be effective. It might make the "threat fatigue" increase though.
How do I make color-coded maps like that of the United States, for example, using excel data?
I want to be able to input data into excel, and then make color-coded maps, such as by state, or by county. Time magazine uses these sorts of maps frequently, and I would like to know how to do this.
This is not possible natively in Excel. However, there are a few solutions out there if you Google color coded maps.
Here is one:-
