Home Money Saving Ideas
Do you need to find some easy ways to cut money out of your personal budget? With the economy on the rocks and job security nothing but a dream, it makes sense to trim your spending so you can save some cash for emergencies. The best place to look for cost savings is probably right in your own home. You might think you already economize in your daily living, but a little creative thought will probably show you ways to cut your expenses by several hundred dollars per year.
One of the easiest places to find ways to save is in the items that you use every day or week and give little thought to. If you run a home business or just pay your personal bills with checks, you can save a lot of money if you buy business checks online, where you can typically save half of what you would normally pay at your bank. If you have a home office, you can save a bundle by purchasing things like envelopes in bulk at your local warehouse club instead of paying retail for a few at a time at your local supermarket.
Consider how many rolls of paper towels your family runs through every year? Use old scraps of cloth cut from cotton jeans and tee shirts to clean up messes, instead of paper towels, if you normally use a lot of them for things like wiping out cat litter boxes or cleaning up after your toddler's meals. When you are finished, rinse the rags out and drop them in the basket with the rest of your laundry. This change in resource use could save you enough money for several takeout pizzas every year.
Then there is home energy consumption. You can probably find ways to reduce your utility bills by ten or twenty percent without making your home any less comfortable. Look for ways to tightly cover your windows at night in winter. Even with double or triple pane glass, heat loss from your windows amounts to a significant portion of your energy bill.
Turn your thermostat down in winter and up in summer any time you will be away from home for more than an hour. Replacing incandescent bulbs with compact flourescent bulbs will pay your investment back in just a few months. Check the insulation in your attic. You could save a lot of energy just by blowing another foot of insulation up there.
If you have a tinkerer's mindset, consider builing your own small wind power system. With a modest capital investment and sweat equity, you can build a small renewable energy system for your home and take a big bite out of your monthly utility bill!
