United States Of America Postal Service Suffered $8.5 Billion Loss This Past Year
Snail mail and also the letter writing that once gave it purpose is almost lifeless. Electronic communications are lingering over the corpse, waiting to beat the last embers of life into nothingness. Where United States Postal Service once had a strangle hold on commercial package shipping, now there are more efficient alternatives for consumers and businesses. Thus, reports MSNBC, the U.S. Postal service is looking at an $8.5 billion decline, which is $4.7 more than the previous year. Even cutting over 100,000 jobs wasn't enough.
Internet stopped people from using the Postal Service
At first the U.S. Postal Service estimates were between $6 billion and $7 billion. This had been for 2009. More people rely on electronic communication meaning there has been a mail decline which has been hurt even more by the economic recession. This has led to less advertising. It went down a bit. There is less money for the Postal Service this way. Hardly any money is made. It's no wonder USPS is pondering a postage rate boost and dropping Saturday service.
Saving costs more than other organizations
In a statement, USPS CFO Joe Corbett remarked that the U.S. Postal Service were able to cut more than $9 billion, mostly by slashing about 105,000 full-time jobs. He said that USPS will work on “efficiency” while having cut “more than any other organization, anywhere” for this. Yet favorable legislation, regulation and labor contracts must follow if the organization is to continue to exist. Labor contracts are currently being negotiated between the USPS and its unions. There hasn’t been a settlement yet. In 2011, the negotiations will continue.
Giving and receiving less first-class mail
There have been less bill payments as well as personal letters and cards the USPS takes care of anymore. There has been much more paperless billing. This has all happened online. In 2010, there was a 6.6. percent decrease in the amount of first class mail sent. The two years before that it had been 8.6 and 4.8 percent. Considering that first-class mail traditionally constitutes more than 50 percent of USPS revenue, the problem is apparent. USPS will continue to battle although more retailers and creditors will give discounts with paperless billing. Considering that Netflix customers are shifting toward using the movie distributor's streaming service more than DVD exchange through postal mail, seems like that only a miraculous act of Congress (read: higher taxes) can conserve the U.S. Postal Service.
