Don't Buy Solar Power Panels When You Can Make Them
Installing renewable energy systems into suburban homes is gaining in feasibility given the limited amount of traditional energy resources. Many government policies now give incentives, such as rebates, discounts or even grants to use such a system in the home. In fact a growing trend is for DIY enthusiasts to make their own systems and make a saving on buying solar power panels. So what should you do, buy solar power panels or make them yourself ?

Well, if you know how you should make them properly. You can save plenty of money doing this than buying a solar panel. Obviously there is more involved and you can't make every component of the panels. So, you will have to purchase the photo voltaic (PV) cells. In fact this can be factored into the total cost of the panel. If you can locate cheap PV cells then you can reduce the cost to make a solar panel.
When you have the PV cells all you have to do is join them together in a serial or parallel configuration on a wooden board and frame. The board will hold the PV cells together along with the wiring used to join them up and allow current to flow to a battery bank. Some plastic or glass covering will go over the PV cells to protect them from weathering and other damage.
So it is not a big deal to make a solar panel but making a few can be time consuming. As with most new things, the first panel will take a bit of time, but the following panels will be easier to make. The other time consuming part of putting a solar powered system into your home is integrating the system into electrical system. So to restate, after the first home made solar power panel, making additional panels is quicker and easier.
The only reason why you would buy solar power panels (if you knew how to make them) is because the PV cells that you could source are inferior to the pre-made panels cells. You may also find it more convenient to buy a new panel than have to find PV cells, plywood frames, glass covering, wires and the like, but obviously this will cost more. It really depends if such a DIY project lights your fire.
